STUDY OPTIONS AT FUNDACIÓN MARCET

MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO

At Fundacion Marcet we believe that the academic development of an athlete is as important as his physical and sports development. The life of a player is very short, there are very few professional players that continue with their activity after 30, and many of them end up having their careers frustrated because of an injury. So, then, what do they do? It is very important for the players to have an interesting and useful professional opportunity, which is not only becoming a coach of some team.

That’s why, at Fundacion Marcet, the academic studies are not only recommended, but mandatory. We have at our disposal a wide range of study options, depending on their age, country of origin and the student’s interest. Any study is good if it serves to complement the player’s education and turn him into a complete person, prepared for the future: a Mens sana in corpore sano.

Studying options are divided as follows:

1. STUDENTS UNDER 16.

Schooling in Spain is mandatory for students under 16.

They have TWO OPTIONS:

A) SCHOOLING AT A SPANISH HIGH SCHOOL.
a. The student will attend lessons at a High School in Spain. Classes are on-site and he will enrol the course according to their age. Lessons are given in SPANISH and CATALAN.

B) ON-LINE SCHOOLING BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SPORTS OF SPAIN.
a. The Ministry of Education and Sports, together with Fundacion Marcet, has created an on-line education program, special for elite athletes. Lessons are given in SPANISH.

C) AMERICAN SCHOOL.
a. Those students who come from countries where they have followed American education, in English, and wish to continue with it, have the possibility of studying at an American School, special for athletes, and flexible regarding to their tournament and training calendars.

2. STUDENTS FROM 16 TO 18.

Schooling for students over 16 it is NOT mandatory in Spain. Even though, ALL our students must follow some type of studies if they want to join our program:

A). ON-LINE SCHOOLING BY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SPORTS OF SPAIN.
-The Ministry of Education and Sports, together with Fundacion Marcet, has created an on-line education program, special for elite athletes. Lessons are given in SPANISH.

B). AMERICAN SCHOOL.
-Those students who come from countries where they have followed American education, in English, and wish to continue with it, have the possibility of studying at an American School, special for athletes, and flexible regarding to their tournament and training calendars.

C). STUDYING LANGUAGES.
-Those students who don’t want to continue High School are able to do Languages Studies, which are so important at any professional field. These studies can be:
-On-line, by a distance method by the Official Languages School, affiliated to the Ministry of Education.
-On-site. At the UAB, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

3. STUDENTS OVER 18.

Our students over 18 have the opportunity to do the following studies:

A). UNIVERSITY STUDIES.

We recommend our athletes to study University Degrees, on-line or on-site, at Public or Private Universities. Enrolling a University in Spain, though, requires a lot of preparation and patience. Students must meet certain requirements (Complete High School and Selectividad (state exam) in many cases). Enrolling a public university means having to follow some bureaucratic processes that must be done several months before the course starts. A Private University is more accessible, even though they would also have to get over admission tests, as well as meeting the requirements every university may ask for.

B) POSTGRADUATE DEGREE SPECIALIZED IN SPORTS.

There also exist postgraduate degrees specialized in sports, which give Official Spanish Universities titles, and having a university degree it is NOT one of their requirements. These programs usually last 1 or 2 years, and they can be on-line or on-site.

This is a perfect option for those who, due to a lack of time or preparation, have not been able to access University. On the meantime they have time enough to accurately prepare everything to enrol University the following year. Students widen their knowledge thanks to these postgraduate degrees, they obtain an Official title and they don’t waste time, which is the most important thing.

C). MONOGRAPHIC COURSES.

These are an alternative to the postgraduate degrees that last 1 or 2 years. These are a series of monographic courses of between 2 weeks and 3 months duration, specialized in different sports fields: administration, management or direction of sports companies, sports marketing, sports psychology, physiotherapy and many other aspects related to football and sports).
Thanks to these monographic courses, taught at Universities, students will be also able to widen their knowledge while preparing, or not, their enrolment at a University degree.

D). STUDYING LANGUAGES.
-Those students who don’t want to do University studies are able to do Languages Studies, which are so important at any professional field. These studies can be:
-On-line, by a distance method by the Official Languages School, affiliated to the Ministry of Education.
-On-site. At the UAB, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

At the Marcet International House athletes enjoy a 3 hour study time at the Study and Meeting Room of the residence, where every one sits in front of their laptops or books with determination and joy. A Fundacion Marcet tutor is always there with them to help them out with any doubt or problem they may have.

All our students must bring a laptop with them, because they will need permanent Internet access, for their studies and for the correct following of their personal Marcet agenda.
